My husband has done many smart things in his life. Marrying me is clearly the most intelligent. Choosing not to say yes when I ask if a certain outfit makes me look a bit podgy – he’s got his head screwed on right. At the moment though, I am deeply indebted to him for being savvy enough to insist, at a time when we were saving money, on buying us two shiny new bikes, together with a beautiful Schwinn trailer.
Our summers are joyous as a result. Cycling makes me feel childlike with joy; so freeing, so fun. Admittedly most of the time I use my bike to pick up milk or cycle to Pilates, but every time I go out I feel like a teenager and I feel virtuous. It’s healthy and makes me so happy. I wonder of David Cameron used to feel the same way cycling to work and how much it misses it now that it’s less possible?
The most joyful I feel though is on family bike rides. I cycle behind my Other Half who has the girls chatting and laughing (and sometimes snoozing) in the trailer behind him. They absolutely love it and it means we can take exercise all together. Sometimes that hasn’t been so easy since the girls were too big to go in the backpacks. We’re not the only people to do this – I recently saw some pictures of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s family in the same bike trailer.

As we cycle together, one of my favourite parts of the ride is watching the smiles of the people who see the littlies going by. There aren’t many (or possibly any) of these where we live so people stop, stare and point – and always look happy at the sight of this clever machine. And the girls wave like queens; small grinning faces in their summer chariot.

Feelgood notes: Always make sure everyone wears a helmet (please) – here’s a review of a child’s cycling helmet.
Feelgood query? I’m looking for a website that sells gorgeous cycling gear for a gift for a stylish cycling-mad friend. Any ideas, please post!

What a cute picture. A good way to exercise with babies. Am pregnant now but I’m interested in keeping up cycling so when I have kids so this I like this.
